DR. JEAN-MARC LEMAITRE

NEO-REGEN was created in collaboration with Dr. Jean-Marc Lemaitre.
A pioneering figure in cellular longevity, Dr. Lemaitre achieved the feat in 2011 of rejuvenating cells from centenarians.
A doctor at INSERM and co-director of the Institute of Regenerative Medicine in Montpellier, he focuses his research on longevity, in order to age longer, in better health.

With Dr. Lemaitre, Laboratoires Botanique Avancée is launching a world first: proving cosmetic efficacy on skin organoid, the most advanced model in terms of regeneration.

4 Questions for Dr. Jean-Marc Lemaître

1 - What is a skin organoid?

It is a three-dimensional structure, cultivated in the laboratory from human stem cells. As it develops, the organoid becomes, in a way, a miniature organ, both in its function and its appearance.

2 - How are they developed?

It all starts with a simple blood test. We isolate the blood cells, which are then genetically reprogrammed to become induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), meaning they can regenerate into any cell type in the human body—including skin cells. A stem cell is essentially a mother cell. They are then cultured to reproduce naturally. Within a few days, these stem cells interact with each other and assemble to form a three-dimensional structure that mimics the different layers and functions of the skin: an epidermis, a dermis, a dermo-epidermal junction, and hair follicles. The entire process takes an average of four months. It's revolutionary.

3 - What are the advantages, for a cosmetics brand, of testing its active ingredients on a skin organoid?

This is a truly innovative practice that allows us to explore cellular regeneration. Laboratoires Botanique Avancée is the first cosmetics brand to do so. Generally, active ingredients are tested on reconstructed skin or skin explants—that is, real skin fragments. But organoids—generally used in medicine—have numerous advantages. They are stable for much longer, up to several weeks, compared to just a few days for conventional testing platforms. Another important point: this allows us to precisely target the donor. Ultimately, we will likely be able to move towards personalized cosmetics, where patients have their own skin organoid, created from their own cells. This will enable us to formulate truly customized skincare products that promote skin longevity.

What are you looking for during these tests?

We are trying to determine which active ingredients will be most effective, and then understand which genes will respond to the complex—no fewer than 22,000 are being studied. Everything is tested simultaneously and then analyzed. We are focusing particularly on the 12 hallmarks of aging. With these more advanced tests, we are redefining the very essence of cosmetics. But they are also part of fundamental research and aim to advance regenerative medicine as a whole. The long-term goal is to be able to recreate organs for perfect transplants.
