The Laboratory Garden: From Botanical Research to Cosmetic Formulation

Summary

At the heart of the Domaine de Baulieu, the Jardin du Laboratoire is one of the places where Laboratoires Botanique Avancée’s vision comes to life: observing plants to better understand their mechanisms and identify how they can benefit the skin.

Alongside the Jardin des Simples, which is dedicated to theheritage of plants and pharmacopoeias, the Jardin du Laboratoire focuses on botanical research and the study of living organisms.

Here, plants are grown, observed, and studied in their natural environment. Their development, adaptive abilities, and natural defense mechanisms inform the research conducted by LBA.

Research doesn't begin at a lab bench—it begins through contact with living things.

The Laboratory Garden: A Space Dedicated to Botanical Research

The Laboratory Garden is located in the heart of the Domaine de Baulieu, in a unique natural setting.

The estate is situated on basaltic soil of volcanic origin, natural springs, and a Mediterranean climate characterized by variations in temperature, sunlight, and water availability.

In this environment, plants must constantly adapt. They activate their own defense mechanisms to respond to changes in their environment and continue to grow.

It is precisely this ability of plants to adapt that is of interest to LBA research.

Observing plants in their natural environment provides a better understanding of their natural responses before continuing to study them in the laboratory.

    Understanding Plants’ Natural Adaptation Mechanisms

When faced with intense sunlight, water shortages, or other environmental stresses, plants activate various biological mechanisms to protect themselves and maintain their balance.

In particular, some produce polyphenols, flavonoids, and other plant compounds involved in their defense mechanisms.

These responses represent a particularly interesting area of study for botanical cosmetics research: understanding how a plant protects itself and adapts makes it possible to identify molecules that may be beneficial to the skin.

The Laboratory Garden thus allows researchers to observe plants throughout the seasons, in their natural environment, and to focus their research on the most relevant species and mechanisms.

From the Garden to the Lab: Observe, Identify, Analyze

One of the distinctive features of the LBA approach is the close connection between fieldwork and research.

The species studied in the Laboratory Garden can then be analyzed to better understand their composition and identify the molecules involved in their natural defense and adaptation mechanisms.

This approach follows a specific logic:

Observe the plant, understand its mechanisms, identify the molecules of interest, and then study their potential in cosmetics.

The garden thus serves as a starting point for the research conducted by Laboratoires Botanique Avancée.

This continuity between botany, scientific research, and cosmetic formulation is at the heart of what we call Advanced Botany.

    From Plant to Botanicalactive ingredients

Simply identifying an interesting plant is not enough to make it an effective cosmetic inactive ingredients .

Once the molecules of interest have been identified, various parameters must be studied: their method of extraction, their stability, their concentration, and their incorporation into a formulation.

This is because the effectiveness of a botanical active ingredients does not depend solely on the plant from which it is derived. It also depends on how its molecules are extracted, preserved, and formulated so that they are available to the skin.

That is the whole point of the work being done on botanical active ingredients: to translate knowledge of plants into meaningful cosmetic applications.

This approach is explored in greater depth in our article “ Botanical Actives: What a Plant Must Become to Have an Effect on the Skin .”

The Laboratory Garden should therefore not be viewed merely as a place for producing ingredients. It is, above all, a place for observing and learning about plants.

Two gardens, two complementary approaches to Domaine de Baulieu

The Herb Garden and the Laboratory Garden embody two complementary aspects of botany at the Domaine de Baulieu.

The first is part of theheritage of traditional plant uses and pharmacopoeias. It reflects botanical knowledge passed down through the ages.

The second applies this knowledge to a contemporary approach to botanical research in the field of cosmetics.

One helps us understand the heritage of plants. The other allows us to explore their mechanisms in light of current scientific knowledge.

Together, they embody Laboratoires Botanique Avancée’s commitment to fostering a dialogue between botanical heritage and scientific research.

Advanced Botany: Understanding Plants to Improve Formulation

At Laboratoires Botanique Avancée, botany is not simply a source of ingredients. It is a source of knowledge.

Our approach begins with observing living organisms and understanding the mechanisms that plants have developed to adapt, protect themselves, and regenerate.

This knowledge then informs our research into botanical active ingredients, bio-inspired technologies, and the formulation of our skincare products.

From the Hydrating Infusion Lotion to the Regenerative serum in cream, each formula follows this same approach: selecting active ingredients for their effectiveness and combining them to support the skin’s natural processes.

    Observe. Understand. Articulate.

The Laboratory Garden embodies this approach and gives full meaning to Advanced Botany: drawing on living organisms to develop cosmetics based on an understanding of plants and the skin.
